Sicko

So I finally sat down this week to confront the movie that I knew I needed to watch but really did not want to watch... Michael Moore's, 'Sicko'. 123 minutes, and I wasn't sure that I could stomach wasting two hours of my life on this, but I did. To hear the media and other describe it, I was expecting a documentary. Not exactly how I would describe it.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the film (and I stress FILM, not documentary), Moore addresses a number of individual situations of people/families in dealing with their insurance coverage and the health care received, here in the U.S. He takes a close look at these examples and demonstrates how poor our health care system really is. He outlines how insurance companies have used and abused the insured, finding every way possible not to cover claims. He even finds an example of an employee of an insurance firm that says the employee with the fewest claims paid would earn the highest bonus. He then takes his message to Canada, Britain, France, and Cuba (yes, Cuba) to enlighten us as to how effective universal health care would be in the U.S.

All in all, I will say that Moore makes some strong points about the structure of our health care model here, and that it needs to improved. That is where our agreements end. He consistently uses the term, as do the people in the movie, that universal health care is 'free'. I guess if you say it enough, then it must be true, right? Canadians that I have worked with told me that they pay over 51% of their income to federal taxes. So if you have a salary of $70,000 annually, then over $36,000 is being taken by Uncle Same and going right into government coffers. So some may say that this is ok, because the care costs no more. Valid point. But, what the movie does not tell you is how long most citizens have to wait to be seen by a doctor for simple procedures, due to the fact that EVERYONE is at the doctor for anything, because, hey, its free!!

To further expound on the issue, universal care would require the federal government to manage even more of our earned income for us. Give me one example of where our federal government properly manages money and finances...... still waiting. Ever heard of Social Security, welfare, Medicaid???? Can't really say that these departments are solvent. We are over 7 trillion dollars in debt as a nation and hemorrhaging even more every day, and this would only multiply that figure. I want the government taking less of my money, not more. And if that means that I have to be a responsible individual and find quality coverage on my own, then I am all for it.
More so than any other country, we as Americans are individuals, not collectivists, and it is my responsibility to secure the future of me and my family, not some Senate aide that is writing legislation. I do agree that the system needs fixing, just not in the methodology. The insurance companies and health care providers have to be held accountable for their actions, but complete government control is not the answer.
Moore goes on to compare universal health care with fire, police, EMS, and library services that our government provides. The comparison is absurd. What Moore leaves out is that these departments are run locally, either at the county or city level. The power is at the local and state level, which is where most power should be anyway, and where our founding fathers envisioned it. Our government was established to protect us, not take care of us.

And as a final thought, Moore also uses this platform to drill the Bush Administration on the Iraq War about 10 times. This film is pure propaganda, and I hope that anyone watching it has enough of a brain to see it for what it is... a movie.

Welcome Back

Been a few weeks since my last post. Sorry to all of you loyal readers out there (all three of you). I am going to make sure I get at least a few posts in a week to keep my readership level so high...

Petrino: What a joke
After reading about the Falcon's coach leaving midway through his first season with the team, I realized how fed up I am with guys not living up to their word. This guy signed a 5 year contract and leaves in the first year because of some hard times. The good news is that the Falcons will be better off without him, but I can't imagine why any team, college or pro, would want to have a guy like this as their coach. He is going to do the same thing to Arkansas in a year or two when something better comes along.

On a lighter note, at least the Falcons will get a top 3 draft pick this year. Maybe they'll actually pick somebody that can play at the NFL level. But I am not holding my breath.

2008 Prez Race Update
I have to say that I am excited about the fact that Mike Huckabee has leapt forward to frontrunner on the Republican side of the race. He is the only candidate who has pushed the FairTax, which I believe could lead our nation to huge gains in economic freedom and prosperity. He is also socially conservative, unlike most of the other candidates. I need to do more research on all of his positions before I start branding him as my guy in the race, but I like what I have seen and heard up to this point.

And its always fun for me to watch Billary start taking hits from all sides. Its becoming evident that no one likes her, and she has put her foot in her mouth enough times to turn off quite a few voters. Its still early, but I hope she keeps plummeting.

GT's New Coach
I am very excited about Paul Johnson coming on board to run the Jackets' football team next year. Everything I have read says that this guy is no-nonsense, and he knows the game. He has won everywhere he has coached, including Navy. He knows how to recruit the 'smart' players who would fit in at Tech, and his offense will give defenses fits next year. It should be a fun team to watch.

Ho, Ho, Ho

Evidently, that phrase will no longer be appropriate for all of the Santas throughout the malls of Australia. It has been determined by a group of "experts" that this phrase could frighten kids and insult women..... ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS????? I am so sick of the political correctness that overwhelms us today. Luckily in this case, the wily old Santas are telling their recruitment firm to shove off, and it seems that the public agrees. Here is a link to the article.

You see, this is just a little symptom of a much bigger problem. We are now expected not to offend anyone, ever. Christmas lights? They might offend Muslims. or Jews. or Atheists. or Buddhists. Guess what? I don't care. One of the greatest aspects of this country is our ability to stand independently for what we believe INDEPENDENTLY. I don't need some moron telling me that I should be offended by a menorah because I am a Christian. This is all part of the 'groupthink' idea, that we should not be individuals that stand out differently, but we should all be the same. Everyone is not equal, and this differentiation is why our culture has been so strong for so long.

Glavine a Brave again?

Word on the street here is that today the Braves offered Glavine a $7 mil, one year offer today, and it looks as if Glavine's agent counterproposed something acceptable. Could have him introduced in his old braves uni on Monday. As a lifelong Braves fan, I'm cautiously excited. He fell off towards the end of the year this past year, but the guy logged over 200 innings and won 13 ball games... that's more than all of the Braves pitchers from last year not named Hudson or Smoltz. Great top 3 if this happens for '08. Add in Chuck James and Reyes to close out the starting 5, and we have a group that should all help alleviate the bullpen woes by keeping them out of the game until the 7-9th innings. And I have yet to mention Mike Hampton.

I'm watching a standup routine right now of Frank Caliendo live from Vegas. I can't stop laughing. I'll plug his show FrankTV, which starts Tuesday night at11 on TBS. Definitely my favorite comedian on the air right now.

Today is...

my wife's 27th birthday. Tonight, we are heading out to celebrate at South City Kitchen in Midtown. Should be fun. You can expect to read a review about it here. Never been there before, but I have heard nothing but good things.

My old boss told me on many occasions that I married way out of my league. After taking a look at this pic I'd have to say I agree. I don't know what she was thinking...

American Gangster (Spoiler Alert)

Took in the new Denzel flick, 'American Gangster' Sunday afternoon and I have to say it was pretty solid. Denzel plays the role of Frank Lucas, who basically single-handedly changed the heroin business in Harlem during the 1970's. The movie is almost three hours long, but definitely worth it. What makes the story so interesting is how Lucas was able to go under the radar of the NYPD and the feds for so long. If the movie is accurate, they really did not even know he existed until long after his product starting hitting the market. In a market dominated by the mafia, it was one single man from Harlem that altered the landscape of the industry. Just like a true entrepreneur, his decision to go around the middleman and buy direct from the manufacturer let him drop his prices and manage quality of goods... Sounds like a good story for a high school econ course, except for the whole heroin-smuggling-murder-embezzlement sidebar. Other than that, I have to say that Mr. Lucas was quite the businessman. Go to wikipedia.com and you can find all sorts of articles written the actual events that took place.

Friday Thoughts

Hillary gives the FairTax a second thought... Yeah right.
Hillary???
Could someone please tell me why the entire nation is so fascinated with Hillary Clinton? Every Republican debate is centered on Hillary, and how the particular candidate is her polar opposite. And the media eats it up. All of this is going to help her get elected next year, which is not exactly what I have in mind. We are being bombarded and brainwashed into thinking that she is actually qualified for the job at hand, and I don't think that a few years in the Senate after 8 years in the White House as First Lady makes her a good fit.
http://www.townhall.com/columnists/DickMorrisandEileenMcGann/2007/10/27/what_shed_do_hillarys_hidden_agenda
Take a look at this article by Dick Morris that examines Hillary's "non-stances" and what she will likely be able to do if elected.

On a lighter note...
Its Friday, so no need to be dwell on the upcoming doom and gloom of Nov 08. Should be a good weekend coming up. Some great college football matchups on Saturday should keep me busy. At least I don't have to wait until Saturday to endure another Georgia Tech football debacle... I got to do that last night vs. VaTech. Great game, if you like watching your QB throw 17 interceptions. Basketball season starts soon.

Pats-Colts on Sunday will be a great one, and I am saying it here that Peyton and the boys will cool of the Pats with a 38-31 victory. I need Peyton to throw a few TD's to keep my fantasy football team going strong as well. Maybe I am biased on this one?

Gonna check out 'American Gangster' this weekend as well. Expect a full review coming shortly.

Take this test

http://www.speakout.com/VoteMatch/senate2006.asp?quiz=2008

When you get about 10 minutes of free time, take this quiz to see which potential candidate for the '08 Presidential race you match up with.

Without taking the quiz, my assumption was that I would match up well with Fred Thompson. After taking the quiz, my match was none other than... Duncan Hunter? Most of you have probably never heard of him, so that gives me little hope for my man. A Rep from California (yep, Cali) is my horse. Too bad he probably won't make it out of the year in the race.

Anyway, this at least gives you a pulse of the key issues out there now and who stands for what (if they stand for anything at all).

Random Tuesday Thoughts

Went and saw 'Gone Baby Gone' this evening, and had to say it was a pretty good movie. I will not say that it was a good adaptation of the novel by Dennis Lehane though. Does it bother anyone else when a great book gets butchered by the screenwriter/director (in this case the former member of Bennifer, Ben Affleck)? This also happened with virtually every Tom Clancy novel turned movie, most notably 'The Sum of All Fears' (starring Ben Affleck, FYI). If you don't plan on following the main storyline of the book, give the freakin movie a different name.

Bravos traded away Edgar Renteria yesterday, and I can't say I am too happy about that. Got two minor leaguers for their most consistent and productive everyday player. Hopefully Frank Wren has something up his sleeve with this move, b/c we just got weaker for the time being.

I saw an extended preview of the new Frank Caliendo series on TBS, 'FrankTV'. Looks absolutely hysterical. That guy can imitate anybody, and as much as it pains me to say, his imitation of GW is the funniest thing I have ever seen.

Speaking of funny, I leave you with this.
